Music and Your Mood

Have you ever noticed how music affects your mood? Or your mood affects your choice of music?

You’re feeling sad so you might play some sad songs. You need uplifting so you might play some rock music or lively pop music. Or maybe you like classical music and Mars, The Bringer of War from The Planets is just what you need to get you started on a project.

Did you know that in physics noise is considered disordered sound and music is ordered sound?

That’s an interesting way to look at it, although I think some music could be considered “disordered sound”!

Emotional Association

A song or piece of music can have an association with something whether it’s pleasant or unpleasant and on hearing it again can recreate the emotion of the time.

For example, when I saw A Star is Born in 1977 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson I cried, it was sad! The two songs she sings at the end of the movie just make you cry. Years later I listened to the same songs and cried again! If I hadn’t seen the movie I probably wouldn’t have been so emotionally affected.

Conversely, watching The Greatest Showman and hearing those songs brings about a joyful feeling because the film and the songs are very uplifting.

How to Use Music to Improve your Mood

So, what’s the point of all this?

The point is how to use music to improve your mood.

I like to go for a walk early in the morning and listen to music while I’m walking. Sometimes it’s a bit of rocking Queen that’s needed to give me a boost. Other times it’s something with a bit more light-hearted bounce like Electric Light Orchestra’s Mr Blue Sky – I can’t help but feel cheerful and looking forward to the data after listening to that. Sometimes it’s OneRepublic.

It all depends on my mood but by the end of the walk I’m feeling uplifted and ready to attack the day!

Whatever change of mood you want, try some music! If you’re sad and want to feel happy; if you’re bored and need some liveliness; if you’re stressed and want to chill out – classical, rock, pop – whatever it is put it on!

And as Snoopy says – music makes me happy!
