If there was ever a time to find ways to be happy it’s now!
The search for happiness is something many people are engaged upon but what is happiness?
To some, it’s an elusive ‘something’ that we’re trying to reach – “I want to be happy”. To others, it’s more clearly defined and they know what makes them happy.
Working at a 9-5 job day in, day out, just to pay the bills and hopefully have that annual holiday where you can go somewhere special and you’ll be happy.
What about that “special” someone. Maybe you’ve found him/her and you’re always happy or maybe it wasn’t the idyllic situation you had in your mind. Or are you still searching for that someone?
All of these touch on happiness.
One of the things that affects a person’s happiness is what other people do to them. A vice versa, what you do to others also affects your happiness. Have you ever looked at it that way?
How about when you see a person struggling to get across the road, you help them and they’re very thankful. Does that make you feel happy? It does me!
What about if you’re struggling with some big shopping bags and you drop one. Someone comes to your aid and picks up your shopping. Doesn’t that make you feel good?
The opposite is true. Imagine those two scenarios and you don’t help the person struggling and no-one comes to help you. That makes for unhappiness.
When I was younger I was introduced to a book. It has 21 rules of conduct (precepts). At the time I couldn’t see how following these rules would result in happiness but it was interesting – as I read each rule and started to use it in my life I noticed I did start feeling happier.
One of the precepts is “Try to treat others as you would want them to treat you”. It sounds simple, right? So what could that have to do with happiness?
I thought about it and started paying more attention to how I treated people and I noticed how I started to feel better about myself. And I realised that if I can’t feel good about myself there’s no way I was going to be happy!
And there are 20 more precepts to work on!
The book I mentioned is called The Way to Happiness.
