Best Exercise for Beginners or the Unfit

We’d all like to be fit, slim and jumping for joy just like the lady in this picture! Anything is possible if it’s done the right way and on the right gradient – building it up bit by bit, each time doing a little bit more. It doesn’t mean trying to run a mile when you haven’t run anywhere apart from catching the bus in the last 10 years.

One way of getting fit on a gradient is by doing it at home. If you go to a class you can be tempted to try and keep up which is fine if you have a relative level of fitness, but if you’re just starting out it could be that you can only do 10 minutes. That 10 minutes can then build into 15 minutes, 20 minutes and before you know it you’ll ready for an hour’s class!

There is a series of exercise DVDs called 10 Minute Solution, that provides 5 separate 10-minute workouts. This is useful if you’ve only got 10 minutes to spare or if you’re very unfit. As you do each 10 minutes you might even find you’re ready for another 10. The DVDs that I tried are not too strenuous and once you master the steps you start to improve in fitness. Some of the exercises may be difficult at first but as your ability to move increases you will find you can master them and perhaps even do the whole 50 minute DVD!

Here are a few that I’ve tried:

10 Minute Solution – Fat Blasting Dance Mix

Fat Blasting Dance Mix

This is my absolute favourite. I love Jennifer Galardi the instructor. She’s bright and cheerful but not annoyingly so and you don’t get fed up with her voice after watching it time and time again like you can with some.

It can take a little while to master the routines but the first one is pretty simple. The one with the rib isolations is a bit taxing and I wouldn’t suggest doing that until you’re a little fitter.

This is my “go-to” DVD – if I don’t feel like exercising I can always put this one on and get going.

Dance Off Fat Fast

This is also a good one with a nice instructor. The exercises are fairly easy going and not too strenuous.

The instructor is cheerful and nice to follow.

My favourite segment is the Cardio Swing Dance. The Fat Blasting Flashback can take a few times through to master the moves but is a lot of fun.

Dance Your Body Thin

This is another one that I’ve found can be done without too much effort – especially if you don’t feel like doing any exercise.

The instructor is Andrea Rodgers and she encourages without being annoying and I found I don’t mind listening to her over and over again!

She also created the Xtend Barre: Ballet Workout which will be the subject of another blog post.
