If, like 33% of adults, you suffer from insomnia, whether occasionally or frequently, it affects your whole life and can have a significant impact on your mental and physical health. It puts stress on the mind and the body and as a result, it’s difficult to operate at your best. So what if there was a way to help you get to sleep? And what if that help was as simple as sleep affirmations?
This article discusses one tool that helps deal with insomnia – sleep affirmations.
What Sleep Affirmations Can I Use to Help Me Sleep?
In case you don’t know what affirmations are scroll down the page for a detailed description. You’ll also find other ways to help “switch off” and prepare yourself for a good night’s sleep.
With sleep affirmations, it can help clear your mind and put you in a state of restful sleep.
Use the affirmations below each night, repeating them in your mind over and over and really begin to feel the truth of them.
Here are a few tips to help you get started with sleep affirmations:
- There are a few ways to use these affirmations, for example, one way is to repeat just one affirmation every night until you feel confident with it. Or you can repeat three of the below each night.
- Choose the ones that you can relate to most first, then move onto the others.
- Print off this list or write them down to really secure them in your mind
- When you repeat them, try as hard as you can to feel the truth of them, rather than just saying the words. It’s our intentions behind the words that give them power.
Here are 12 sleep affirmations you can use to help deal with insomnia:
1. I am relaxed
2. I am calm
3. I am at peace with life
4. I am not worrying
5. I sleep peacefully all night
6. The day is over and I am happy with it
7. I am in the present moment
8. My body is relaxed
9. My thoughts are slowing down
10. Nothing is keeping me awake
11. I am falling into a deep sleep
12. I am asleep
Use as many affirmations as you like. Sometimes 2 or 3 are enough. Remember to think them to yourself over and over and they will eventually become reality.
What is an Affirmation?
To affirm means to “assert something as valid” or “state something emphatically”.
In the sense we are using affirmations, it means saying or thinking something to ourselves.
Our minds are incredibly powerful and what we say to ourselves and how we think about ourselves has a tremendous impact – often more of an impact than what other people say to you.
An example would be – “I feel like crap”. Maybe you do feel like crap and if you keep saying to yourself “I feel like crap” you will continue to feel that way. But what if you were to say “I feel great!” and keep thinking that to yourself, with practice you would start to actually feel better and eventually feel great.
It’s the power of the human mind – to manifest what you’re thinking. It’s a mental attitude.
The only difference between someone who sees a glass as half empty or half full is their mental attitude.
When your thoughts become positive you start to be more optimistic about life. The more you do it, the easier it is and the better you feel.
The key is to switch from a negative thought to a positive one.
“I can’t do this” to “I can do this“.
“I’m not very good at this” to “I’m very good at this“.
“Today is going to be a difficult day” to “Today is going to be a good day”
What Other Ways Can I Fall Asleep With Severe Insomnia?
In addition to sleep affirmations, it is a good idea to set up your environment and your body so you are in a relaxed state. Here are a few ideas that I have found to be workable for me:
- Turn off all screens at least an hour before bed
- Have a relaxing bath – not too hot though, otherwise it speeds up your heart rate which will keep you awake
- Drink a relaxing tea such as camomile. Nothing with caffeine as this is a stimulant
- Don’t eat anything 2 hours before bed, but don’t go to bed hungry. This means you must eat plenty for dinner so you don’t need to snack before bedtime. It may take some trial and error to get this right
- Have a magnesium drink about an hour before bed (Calm is a good one for this) or take a magnesium supplement. Don’t leave it too late or you may need the toilet in the middle of the night
- Make sure your bedroom is at the right temperature. If it’s too warm you won’t be able to sleep so easily. Cool is best but freezing is also not good
- Block out all light. Use blackout blinds if your curtains are thin – even just a little street light can disturb sleep. Turn off the clock radio if you have one
- Get some ventilation in the room. If you’re not able to crack open a window consider getting an air purifier to keep the air fresh. When the air gets stale it can affect your breathing and disturb your sleep
- Read a book in bed – but nothing dramatic as this will get your heart pumping
Sweet Dreams! zzzzzz
