How to Get Motivated

Do you find it hard to get motivated especially after the holiday season? Well, you’re not alone – I know I do.

You know how it is – you’ve had fun with family and friends, eaten good food and drunk plenty but now it’s time to return to the “real world” and it’s easy not to feel motivated.

This is one of the reasons people make New Year Resolutions at the beginning of a year. Some of these may be habits you want to change but others are goals you want to achieve. It gives you something to look forward to. And let’s face it, what fun is there in life if you have nothing to look forward to!

But why only make resolutions at the beginning of the year? Why not take stock of how things are going during the year and make new resolutions, set new goals?

Look at changes you want to make in life to improve things in your life and put these into motion – at any time of the year.

If you’re a small business owner you might have the goal to increase business so you’re making more money.

If you’re employed, maybe you want a promotion?

Maybe you want to find the love of your life? There are infinite possibilities.

Very often people “re-log” their goals from last year. In fact, the difficulty in getting motivated can be as a result of failing to achieve your goals. The things you set out to do last year and didn’t manage. It can be harder to get going again, having failed.

What can you do about it?

Here’s something you can do about it.

Take a look at exactly what that goal was:

  • lose weight
  • get fit
  • give up smoking
  • make more money
  • get a new job
  • become a successful artist etc.

Whatever it was, write it down.

Now take a look at why you had that goal. What was it you had wanted to achieve when you decided on that goal?

Why did you want to lose weight? Why did you want to get fit? etc.

Write down your reason.

Now – imagine you’re taking an eraser and wipe the page clean on past failures. No need to write them down, just wipe them out!

Put the date at the top of the page and NEWLY write down what your goal is and why you want to achieve that. It could be the same goal as before but look at it NEWLY without any of the “failures” attached to it.

Feel brighter and more motivated? If not, you may need to repeat the process with other goals.

Example

2021

  1. Run a 5K marathon – so I get fit and have fun running with others
  2. Start my own business – so I can be doing something I enjoy doing

Now you have something to look forward to.
